Call for Participation
The Winter School for Macedonian Intermediality is a compact format of workshops and seminars. Over the course of just five days, gain in-depth insight into the dynamics of relations between society and culture in the Yugoslav successor state – North Macedonia. This young Balkan country has been a candidate for accession to the European Union since 2005. The Winter School brings together academic expertise from Slavic Studies, South-East European Studies, the PhD programme “Visual Culture and Intermediality”, the profile area “Dimensions of Europe” at the University of Graz, and international cooperation partners from academia and the arts.
The Third Winter School in Graz owes its choice of an intermedial thematic focus to the increasing international recognition of contemporary theatre and film productions, as well as literature and media art from North Macedonia. However, it is not only about phenomena of intermediality, for example, in visual culture. Memory, discourse and gender also migrate between different media forms of expression and art forms. Transmedia interrelations and the social relevance of intermedia practices are therefore a special focus of the lectures, workshops (on academic blogging, curation and literary translation), cultural events (readings, film, music) and language activities on two levels:
I SprachLabor: Introductory workshop for beginners led by the polyglot linguist Dr. Arno Wonisch, who designed the course for participants with other languages from the Slavic language group and Slavicists with a comparative approach.
II SprechFabrik: Intensive workshops on theatre skills and dramatic communication for advanced students, led by Gala Naseva, lecturer and PhD researcher, together with renowned practitioners from the Macedonian theatre scene.
The Winter School is intended for students, young researchers and all those interested in North Macedonia and the Macedonian language, society, literature, theatre and film. Hybrid participation in the academic program and cultural events is open to a wide audience; Online access is possible with prior registration.
