Introduction
Graz has a long tradition as an educational center for the Slavic neighboring countries and as a center of philological research into Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. The world's oldest chair for Slovenian was established here.
Today, the focus is on Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Russian and Slovenian, which can also be studied for a teaching degree. The additional languages offered at the institute include Polish and Ukrainian,
Research in the field of Slavic linguistics, literature and cultural studies is guided by interdisciplinary questions. Linguistics is particularly well-funded.
Slavic Studies in Graz has an excellent international network and is linked to a number of research centers at the university, including the Center for Southeast European Studies and the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities.
We Stand With Ukraine
As representatives of the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Graz, we are deeply saddened by the invasion of Ukraine by the armed forces of the Russian Federation and condemn this violent attack on a sovereign state in the strongest possible terms.
Our solidarity and sympathy go out to the Ukrainians as well as our students and teachers who have to fear for their families and friends in Ukraine in these difficult times.
We thank all those people in Russia who, at great personal risk, are raising their voices against the war and for a free, self-determined Ukraine.
We call on everyone who speaks, learns and teaches a Slavic language to contribute to dialog and understanding!
