Russian past passive participles
It is commonly assumed that past passive participles (PPPs) in Russian can only be derived from perfective verbs. In this talk I will present a corpus study (joint work with Olga Borik) to show that imperfective PPPs in Russian exist, also in contemporary Russian; they are productive (more than one occurrence with a given verb, all kinds of verbs from different verb classes) and they convey a transparent, compositional semantics, in the sense that they express the expected passive meaning and are used in ordinary verbal/eventive passive constructions. A main finding of this work, however, is that imperfective participial passives are not found with a process reading (one of the main readings of imperfective verb forms in the language otherwise), e.g. we did not find examples that could be translated as ‘NP was being V-ed’ into English. Rather, we hypothesise that all the imperfective PPPs we found express the so-called general-factual reading of the imperfective. We spell out a tentative account of a subgroup of these PPPs.
In the beginning of the talk, I will also give a general overview of the kinds of participles and different passive constructions we find in Russian.
